Independent Candidate for Groom, Suzie Holt, a passionate advocate for community welfare, has thrown her support behind national carer advocate George Helon’s campaign to prioritize carers’ rights in the upcoming 2025 federal election.
Backed by nearly 26,000 petition supporters, the campaign aims to bring real political accountability to the plight of Australia’s 3 million unpaid carers.
Holt, pictured signing the Charter of Commitments to Carers alongside Helon, emphasised the importance of this initiative. “Unpaid carers are the unsung heroes of our communities,” Holt said. “They provide vital support in aged care, disability, and health, yet they are often overlooked and underappreciated. This campaign is a call to action for all Australians to stand with carers and demand change.”
Only 600,000 carers receive federal financial assistance, leaving millions without adequate support, says Helon.
“Carers are the mainstay of aged care, health and disability sectors,” Helon said. “We save the government between $77.9 and $126.2 billion each year—yet get treated like monkeys thrown a handful of peanuts for our sacrifices.”
“Carers are the backbone of our society,” Holt stated. “It’s unacceptable that they continue to face rising living costs and stagnant support. This petition is a powerful tool to amplify their voices and push for meaningful reform.”
Holt is calling on carers, families, and community allies to share the petition and circulate the Charter widely. The next step is lobbying local candidates to ensure these priorities gain traction before voting begins.
“This is a pivotal moment for carers across Australia,” Holt said. “Together, we can make a difference and ensure carers receive the recognition and support they deserve.”
