Darling Downs, Australia - Today, regional community advocate, Suzie Holt, announced her commitment to protecting prime agricultural land on the Darling Downs from the impacts of fossil fuels and ensuring food security for the region. Holt, a long-time advocate for rural communities, recognizes the importance of preserving fertile soil and maintaining rural livelihoods in the Darling Downs region.

Holt has identified several modifications to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act that would strengthen the protection of prime agricultural land on the Darling Downs and ensure the region's food security. These include:

Including prime agricultural land on the Darling Downs as a matter of national environmental significance under Section 5 of the EPBC Act.

Requiring a higher level of assessment and approval for actions that would impact prime agricultural land on the Darling Downs under Section 18 of the EPBC Act.

Making provisions for the protection of prime agricultural land on the Darling Downs through bilateral agreements between the Commonwealth and state or territory governments under Section 21 of the EPBC Act.

"Protecting our environment and preserving our agricultural land is crucial for the future of our communities and our planet," Holt said. "By modifying the EPBC Act to protect prime agricultural land on the Darling Downs, we can ensure that our region remains productive, sustainable, and liveable for generations to come, and that our food security is not compromised."
