In Queensland the 2022 independent candidate Suzie Holt is running again in Groom, a seat based in Toowoomba and held by the Liberal National party’s Garth Hamilton on a margin of just under 7%. As I have written before, Holt has never stopped campaigning and so will be worth watching in the coming election.

The state of democracy has understandably been getting a lot of press lately, as the US election campaign enters its final hours.

It is a long way from Washington to Wagga Wagga but there has been abnormal political interest in the US election in regional Australia. It is hard to look away.

We’re due for our own federal election in the first half of next year. The major political parties here are trying to anticipate the US result and absorb its lessons. But there are other, much more local changes afoot.
