A Minister for Food

Australia is at a critical moment in its agricultural and food production landscape. Our nation can be a global leader in food security, agricultural innovation, and sustainable farming. However, the absence of a dedicated Minister for Food has led to fragmented policies, inadequate protection of prime agricultural land, and missed regional growth and economic development opportunities.

I am fighting for a Minister for Food to ensure food security, support farmers, and drive investment in the agricultural sector.

Food Security and Resilience

Australia’s food security is increasingly under threat due to climate change, natural disasters, supply chain disruptions, and economic pressures on farmers.

Establishing a Minister for Food will provide a coordinated national approach to safeguarding food security for future generations.

Protecting Prime Agricultural Land

Prime agricultural land is essential for maintaining food production and export capabilities.

I have advocated for a National Policy Statement for Prime Agricultural Land and will continue to drive stronger protections against urban sprawl, mining projects, and infrastructure developments that threaten farming land.

Strengthening Regional and Rural Economies

Agriculture is a significant economic driver, particularly in regions like Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, contributing over $1.26 billion to the local economy and supporting thousands of jobs.

A Minister for Food would ensure that rural and regional farmers have direct representation at the Federal level, providing tailored policies to sustain and grow agricultural communities.

Supply Chain and Market Stability

Disruptions in food supply chains due to global conflicts, pandemics, and logistical failures highlight the need for a dedicated minister to oversee and strengthen national food production and distribution.

Encouraging local food processing, storage, and distribution networks will create jobs and reduce import reliance.

Innovation and Sustainability in Agriculture

Investment in research and innovation, including regenerative farming, Ag Tech, and sustainable water management, is essential to ensuring the future of Australian agriculture.

A Minister for Food would oversee grants and partnerships that enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability while minimising environmental impacts.

Biosecurity and Export Growth

Australia’s reputation for high-quality agricultural products depends on stringent biosecurity measures.

Expanding export opportunities while protecting against biosecurity threats requires a dedicated minister to navigate international trade agreements and ensure compliance with global standards.

What I am fighting for

1. Legislate for a Minister for Food to oversee national food security, agricultural protection, and rural economic development.

2. Establish a National Food Security and Agriculture Strategy to guide future investment and policy decisions.

3. Implement a National Policy Statement for Prime Agricultural Land to ensure farmland is protected and used sustainably.

4. Increase funding for regional agricultural research and innovation, including the development of a food research and education centre in Groom.

5. Support farmers and food producers with financial incentives, infrastructure investment, and workforce training programs.

6. Ensure collaboration between all levels of government, industry leaders, and farmers to create a unified and effective food policy framework.

7. Fight to ensure that the recommendations from the Australian Food Story: Feeding the Nation and Beyond report are delivered, particularly regarding establishing a National Food Plan, protecting food system infrastructure, and ensuring supply chain resilience.

8. Reporting to the Minister for Food, establish a National Network of Food Excellence and Security between all levels of government, industry leaders, and farmers to create a unified and effective food policy framework.

I am committed to fighting for Australian farmers, securing food for future generations, and ensuring rural and regional communities thrive.

A Minister for Food is a policy priority and necessary for Australia’s long-term economic and social prosperity. Groom deserves strong, independent leadership prioritising food security, agricultural sustainability, and economic resilience.
